Metropolitan Sotirios: “The Church with no youth suffers a slow death”

During this ecclesiastical year, the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Toronto (Canada) is hosting 10 Philoptochos Retreats in various cities across the country.

The first took place on Saturday, November 26, in Ottawa, Canada’s capital. Approximately 65 ladies and other pious Christians participated.

The second retreat convened in Calgary, Alberta, on Saturday, December 3, with 115 ladies and other pious faithful in attendance.

The program of every Philoptochos Retreat is as follows:

A) The Divine Liturgy, celebrated only by the Metropolitan Archbishop, where all attending receive Holy Communion.
B) A homily by Metropolitan Sotirios on the scriptural verse: “Let the little children come to Me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the Kingdom of Heaven.”
C) A Luncheon.
D) A homily from the Parish Priest of the hosting Community on the topic, “The sanctity of the body.”

In both the aforementioned Philoptochos Retreats, His Eminence emphasized the participation of our children and youth in the life of the Church. In his remarks, Metropolitan Sotirios underscored the need for people to attend Church as a family every Sunday. “If our children and youth do not participate in the life of the Church, the Church will suffer a slow death, with a consequence of there being no congregation in a few years.” His Eminence also stressed another important point: people who willfully choose to have no children are committing a crime against our race and against the Church.

On Sunday, December 4, His Eminence visited the Community of Edmonton, Alberta. There, His Eminence concelebrated the Divine Liturgy with His Grace Ilarion, Bishop of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada, and four priests: Fr. D. Rougas, former Parish Priest of the Community of Edmonton (who is now retired); Fr. C. Tzintis, Parish Priest of the Community; and the two Ukrainian Orthodox priests accompanying His Grace, Fr. V. Lacusta, and Fr. R. Poworoznik. The church was filled to capacity. At the end of the Divine Liturgy, Metropolitan Sotirios inducted Professor Athanasios Tavouktsoglou as an Archon Referendarios of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. His Grace Bishop Ilarion offered greetings at the end of the Divine Liturgy.

Following the Divine Liturgy, a luncheon was offered to all. During the luncheon, the new Archon Referendarios, Professor Tavouktsoglou, spoke about the significance and the mission of our Ecumenical Patriarchate, along with the exemplary work that has been carried out by His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew during his 25 years of service as Ecumenical Patriarch. The day concluded with Metropolitan Sotirios emphasizing the importance of the offikia, along with the honour and responsibilities of the Archons. His Eminence spoke fondly about our Ecumenical Patriarchate and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, explaining historically the problems our Ecumenical Patriarchate is facing, along with the vital role it plays in the coordination of worldwide Orthodoxy.

Τορόντο Σωτήριος: Εκκλησία χωρίς παιδιά αργοπεθαίνει

Στην Ιερά Μητρόπολη Τορόντο Καναδά, θα γίνουν τούτη την εκκλησιαστική χρονιά δέκα πνευματικές συνάξεις Φιλοπτώχων Αδελφοτήτων, σε διάφορες πόλεις του Καναδά.

Η πρώτη έγινε το Σάββατο 26 Νοεμβρίου, στην πρωτεύουσα του Καναδά Ottawa και έλαβαν μέρος περίπου 65 κυρίες και άλλοι χριστιανοί. Η δεύτερη, έγινε στο Calgary, Alberta το Σάββατο 3 Δεκεμβρίου, με συμμετοχή 115 κυριών και λοιπών χριστιανών.

Το πρόγραμμα κάθε πνευματικής σύναξης των Φιλοπτώχων Αδελφοτήτων περιλαμβάνει

α) Θεία Λειτουργία, την οποία τελεί μόνος του ο Μητροπολίτης και όλοι κοινωνούν των Αχράντων Μυστηρίων.
β) Ομιλία την οποία κάνει ο Μητροπολίτης Σωτήριος με θέμα «Ἄφετε τὰ παιδία ἔρχεσθαι πρός µε, καὶ µὴ κωλύετε αὐτά· τῶν γὰρ τοιούτων ἐστὶν ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ»
γ) Γεύμα.
δ) Ομιλία από τον ιερέα της Κοινότητας με θέμα «Η αγιότης του σώματος».

Στις δύο αυτές πνευματικές συνάξεις η έμφαση από τον Μητροπολίτη έγινε στο θέμα της συμμετοχής των παιδιών και των νέων στη ζωή της Εκκλησίας. Ο Μητροπολίτης Σωτήριος τόνισε, ότι οι άνθρωποι πρέπει να εκκλησιάζονται σαν οικογένειες κάθε Κυριακή. Εάν τα παιδιά δεν συμμετέχουν στη ζωή της Εκκλησίας η Εκκλησία θα αργοπεθαίνει και σε μερικά χρόνια δεν θα υπάρχει εκκλησίασμα. Τόνισε, ακόμα, και ένα άλλο σημείο, ότι η υπογεννητικότητα είναι έγκλημα κατά της φυλής και κατά της Εκκλησίας.

Την Κυριακή 4 Δεκεμβρίου, ο Μητροπολίτης επισκέφθηκε την Κοινότητα του Edmonton, Alberta. Εγινε συλλείτουργο με τον Ουκρανό Επίσκοπο Ιλαρίωνα και τέσσερις ιερείς τον π. Δ. Ρούγα, πρώην ιερέα, συνταξιούχο, της Κοινότητας Edmonton, τον Ιερατικώς Προϊστάμενο της Κοινότητας, π. Χ Τζίντη και τους Ουκρανούς ιερείς π. V. Lacusta, και π. R. Poworoznik.

Κατάμεστη η εκκλησία και στο τέλος της Θείας Λειτουργίας ο Μητροπολίτης Σωτήριος χειροθέτησε σε Άρχοντα, Ρεφερενδάριο, τον καθηγητή πανεπιστημίου κ. Αθανάσιο Ταβουκτσόγλου.

Χαιρετισμό στο τέλος της Θείας Λειτουργίας απηύθυνε ο Επίσκοπος Ιλαρίων.

Ακολούθησε γεύμα στο οποίο παρεκάθησαν όλοι και μίλησε ο νέος Άρχων-Ρεφερενδάριος κ. Ταβουκτσόγλου, εξαίροντας τη σημασία και το έργο του Οικουμενικού μας Πατριαρχείου, αλλά και το θαυμάσιο έργο το οποίο έχει επιτελέσει ο Οικουμενικός μας Πατριάρχης κ.κ. Βαρθολομαίος στα 25 χρόνια που υπηρετεί ως Οικουμενικός Πατριάρχης. Την ημέρα έκλεισε ο Μητροπολίτης Σωτήριος τονίζοντας την σημασία των Οφικίων, αλλά και την τιμή των Αρχόντων και τα καθήκοντά τους. Μίλησε θερμά για το Οικουμενικό μας Πατριαρχείο και τον Οικουμενικό Πατριάρχη κ.κ. Βαρθολομαίο και ιστορικά ανέλυσε τα προβλήματα του Οικουμενικού μας Πατριαρχείου, αλλά και το σπουδαίο ρόλο για τον συντονισμό της παγκόσμιας Ορθοδοξίας.
