One Week with Metropolitan Sotirios

26 Γεννάρη, 2017: Ύστερα απο αεροπορικό ταξίδι 5 ½ ωρών, έφθασε στο αεροδρόμιο του Βανκούβερ, και τον υποδεχθήκαμε οι ιερείς της περιοχής. Το ίδιο βράδυ, προεξήρχε στο τρισάγιο για τον αείμνηστο Π. Τσακούμη στον Ι.Ν. Αγ. Γεωργίου, πρώην πρόεσδρο της Κοινότητος.
Την επομένη, 27 Γεννάρη, προεξήρχε της εξοδίου ακολουθίας, βοηθούμενος από τους ιερείς της περιοχής.
Σάββατο, 28 Γεννάρη, ετέλεσε την Θ. Λειτουργία μόνος του στο Ι.Ν. Αγ. Κωνσταντίνου και Ελένης Surrey, ενώ οι ιερείς και οι ιεροψάλτες απετέλεσαν τον χορό. Μετά την Θεία Κοινωνία, ακολούθησε η Πνευματική Σύναξη των Φιλοπτώχων Αδελφοτήτων της περιοχής. Ομίλησε ο Μητροπολίτης Σωτήριος με θέμα «Άφετε τα παιδία έρχεσθαι πρός με» και ο π. Κ. Καλτσίδης με θέμα «Η Αγιότης του σώματος».
Το απόγευμα, ο Μητροπολίτης και οι ιερείς επεσκέφθησαν τον Άρχοντα Δεπουτάτο Β. Τσακούμη στο νοσοκομείο. Ύστερα απο δύο ημέρες, ο κ. Τσακούμης επέστρεψε στο σπίτι του.
Το βράδυ της ίδιας ημέρας, ο Μητροπολίτης και οι ιερείς είχαμε δείπνο με τις κυρίες των τριών Φιλοπτώχων Αδελφοτήτων της περιοχής, όπου συμμετείχαν η κα. Σ. Ρασσιά, Πρόεδρος της Φιλοπτώχου Αδελφότητος Καναδά και η κα. Ε. West, πρώην πρόεδρος της Φιλοπτώχου Καναδά.
Κυριακή 29 Γεννάρη: Θεία Λειτουργία στον Ι.Ν. Αγ. Γεωργίου, βοηθούμενος από τον π. Δ. Παρτσάφα, π. Δ. Τρυφωνόπουλο και τον π. Κ. Οικονόμου, προϊστάμενο του Ναού.
Στο τέλος της Θείας Λειτουργίας, χειροθέτησε σε Άρχοντα Χαρτοφύλακα τον κ. Ευάγγελο Πάππα, πρώην πρόεδρο της Κοινότητος, ιεροψάλτη και διευθυντή της χορωδίας.
Ακολούθησε το ετήσιο γεύμα της Θεολογικής Ακαδημίας, το οποίο οργανώθηκε από τις τρείς Κοινότητες Μείζονος Βανκούβερ και τους Άρχοντες του Οικουμενικού Πατριαρχείου. Συμμεστείχαν η Πρόξενος της Κύπρου κα. Τ. Berggren, ο Γενικός Πρόξενος της Ελλάδος στο Βανκούβερ κ. Α. Ιωάννου και τα παιδιά της Χειμερινής Κατασκήνωσης «Μεταμόρφωση».
Το βράδυ της ίδιας ημέρας, ο Μητροπολίτης Σωτήριος προεξήρχε στον Μέγα Εσπερινό των Τριών Ιεραρχών στον Ι.Ν. Αγ. Νικολάου, όπου συμμετείχαν όλοι οι ιερείς και ακολούθησε η γιορτή των Ελληνικών Γραμμάτων, με την συμμετοχή μαθητών των τεσσάρων σχολείων της περιοχής μείζονος Βανκούβερ.
Ο Μητροπολίτης Σωτήριος, στην ομιλία του, συγχάρηκε τα παιδιά και ευχαρίστησε τους γονείς, τους δασκάλους και τα Διοικητικά Συμβούλια των Κοινοτήτων, συμπεριλαμβανομένων των ιερέων.
Είπε χαρακτηριστικά ότι στα τελευταία χρόνια που βρίσκεται στη γιορτή αυτή, είδε ότι τα παιδιά έχουν κάνει μεγάλη προόδο και παρότρυνε τα Διοικητικά Συμβούλια και όλους να ιδρύσουν ημερήσιο Ελληνορθόδοξο σχολείο.
Τη Δευτέρα, 30 Γεννάρη, μετά την Θεία Λειτουργία η οποία ετελέσθη σε όλους τους Ιερούς Ναούς, οι ιερείς και ο Μητροπολίτης Σωτήριος παρεκάθησαν σε γεύμα, προσκεκλημένοι του Γενικού Προξένου κ. Α. Ιωάννου.
Εκοιμήθη εν Κυρίω ο Πανοσιολ. Αρχιμ. Φώτιος Πεντίκης, 94 ετών, ο οποίος υπηρέτησε πολλές κοινότητες στις Η.Π.Α. αλλά και στον Καναδά. Ο Μητροπολίτης Σωτήριος και οι ιερείς επήγαν το βράδυ στο Bellingham, Η.Π.Α. και ετέλεσαν τρισάγιο για την ανάπαυση της ψυχής του, στο οποίο συμμετείχαν και αρκετοί ιερείς από τις Η.Π.Α.
Μετά το τρισάγιο, μίλησε ο Μητροπολίτης εξαίροντας τις αρετές του π. Φωτίου, την ταπεινοφροσύνη, την σύνεση και την αφοσίωση με την οποία υπηρέτησε την Εκκλησία. Επίσης, είπε τι πρέπει ο άνθρωπος να κάμνει να κληρονομήσει την αιώνια βασιλεία.
Ο Μητροπολίτης και οι ιερείς είχαν συνεδρίαση στο Ferry Boat, πηγαίνοντας στην Βικτωρία, πρωτεύουσα της Βρεττανικής Κολομβίας για τον Μ. Εσπερινό και την Θ. Λειτουργία στον εορτάζοντα Ι.Ν. της Υπαπαντής.
Το εσπέρας, ετελέσθη ο Μέγας Πανηγυρικός Εσπερινός και το πρωϊ της Πέμπτης η Θεία Λειτουργία με την συμμετοχή όλων των ιερέων – π. Δ. Παρτσάφα, π. Ε. Αραβαντινού, π. Κ. Καλτσίδη, π. Κ. Οικονόμου, π. Τ. Πράττα και του διακόνου Δ. Vickery. Απουσίαζε ο π. Δ. Τρυφωνόπουλος. Πλήθος ευλαβών προσκυνητών προσήλθε από το Βανκούβερ, το Surrey, το Νανάϊμο, αλλά και τις Η.Π.Α.
Στο τέλος της Θείας Λειτουργίας, ο Μητροπολίτης Σωτήριος απέμεινε το οφφίκιον του Οικονόμου στον π. Ε. Αραβαντινό, Ιερατικώς Προϊστάμενο του Ναού.
Ακολούθησε το καθιερωμένο γεύμα. Οι ιερείς ανεχώρησαν για το Βανκούβερ, ενώ ο Μητροπολίτης Σωτήριος παρέμεινε και είχε δείπνο και συνεδρίαση με το Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο της Κοινότητος Βικτώρια. Tην επομένη, ώρα 6:00 π.μ. ανεχώρησε αεροπορικώς για το Τορόντο.
Οι ιερείς της Βρετανικής Κολομβίας ζήσαμε μια εβδομάδα με τον Μητροπολίτη μας σαν μια πραγματική οικογένεια και νοιώσαμε την αγάπη του και την ηρεμία του.

One Week with Metropolitan Sotirios
On January 26, 2017, following a 5 ½-hour flight from Toronto, Metropolitan Sotirios arrived at Vancouver International Airport and was greeted by the Greek Orthodox clergy of the area. That evening, His Eminence presided over the Trisagion prayers for the late P. Tsakumis, former President of the Hellenic Community of Vancouver, at St. George Cathedral. The following morning, the Metropolitan presided over the funeral service, assisted by all the local clergy.
On Saturday, January 28th, the Metropolitan celebrated the Divine Liturgy by himself at Sts. Constantine and Helen (Surrey), while the priests and cantors chanted. After Holy Communion, the Spiritual Philoptochos Retreat of British Columbia took place. Metropolitan Sotirios spoke on the theme “Let the little children come to me,” while Fr. K. Kaltsidis spoke about “The Holiness of the body.”
That afternoon, the Metropolitan and the priests visited Archon Depoutatos Β. Tsakumis at the hospital. Two days later, Mr. Tsakumis was released and returned home.
In the evening, the Metropolitan and clergy had a dinner with the ladies of the three Philoptochos Societies of the area; Mrs. S. Rassias, President of the National Philoptochos; and Mrs. E. West, former National Philoptochos President.
On Sunday, January 29th, His Eminence celebrated the Divine Liturgy at St. George Cathedral, assisted by Fr. D. Partsafas, Fr. D. Tryphonopoulos, and Fr. C. Economos, Parish Priest.
At the end of the Divine Liturgy, the Metropolitan tonsured as Archon Hartophylax Mr. Evangelos Pappas, former President of the Community, Chanter and Choir Master.
Thereafter, the annual luncheon of the Theological Academy took place. The luncheon was organized by the three communities of Metro Vancouver and Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in British Columbia.
The luncheon was also attended by: Mrs. T. Berggren, Consul of Cyprus in B.C.; Mr. A. Ioannou, Consul General of Greece in Vancouver; and kids from Camp Metamorphosis B.C.
That evening, Metropolitan Sotirios presided at the Great Vespers for the Feast of the Three Hierarchs at St. Nicholas Church, where all the priests of the area assisted. Following Vespers, the Greek Education Celebration was held, where students from all four schools of Metro Vancouver participated.
In his speech, Metropolitan Sotirios congratulated the students and thanked the parents, teachers, the Community Councils and all of the priests.
He characteristically noted the great improvement of the students over the years, as he has been attending this event for many years now. He encouraged the Community Councils and all the attendees to establish a Greek Orthodox Day School.
On Monday, January 30th, Divine Liturgies were celebrated in all of the Vancouver-area parishes. Afterwards, the clergy and Metropolitan Sotirios were invited to lunch by the Hon. A. Ioannou, Consul General of Greece in Vancouver.
The Very Rev. Fr. Photios Pentikis fell asleep in the Lord at 94 years of age. He served many communities in both the United States and Canada during his ministry. Together with the clergy, Metropolitan Sotirios went to Bellingham, Washington, USA and prayed the Trisagion service for the repose of his soul; many priests from the United States were also present.
After the Trisagion, Metropolitan Sotirios spoke about the virtues of Fr. Photios – the humility, prudence and dedication which he served the Church. His Eminence also spoke about what every person should do in order to inherit the eternal Kingdom of God.
His Eminence and the clergy had a meeting on the Ferry Boat on route to Victoria, the capital city of British Columbia, where they later participated in the Great Vespers and Divine Liturgy of the celebrating church of Ypapanti.
Great Vespers was held in the evening; the following morning, the Divine Liturgy was celebrated by His Eminence, assisted by all the clergy: Fr. D. Partsafas; Fr. E. Aravantinos, Parish Priest; Fr. K. Kaltsidis; Fr. C. Economos; Fr. T. Prattas; and Dn. D. Vickery. (Fr. D. Tryphonopoulos was absent from this pastoral visit.) Many pious faithful arrived from Vancouver, Surrey, Nanaimo, and from the United States as well.
At the end of the Divine Liturgy, Metropolitan Sotirios bestowed the office of Economos to Fr. E. Aravantinos, Parish Priest of Ypapanti Church.
The annual luncheon followed; while the clergy departed for Vancouver, Metropolitan Sotirios remained in Victoria to have a dinner and a meeting with the Community Council of Victoria. The next day, at 6AM, His Eminence boarded a plane and returned to the Metropolis in Toronto.
The clergy of British Columbia lived a week with our Metropolitan as one true family, seeing his paternal love and his tranquility.
