Το όχι είναι άρνηση, αλλά συνεπάγεται θέση. Όχι χωρίς ναι, δεν µπορεί να σταθεί. Αυτό είναι φυσικός νόµος.
28 Οκτωβρίου 1940. Στο ιταµό τηλεγράφηµα της Ιταλίας η Ελλάδα απάντησε όχι. Όχι Ιταλέ. Δε θα πατήσεις τα άγια χώµατα της πατρίδας. Δε θα κάµεις τον περίπατό σου στην Αθήνα.
Είπε αυτό το όχι ο ελληνικός λαός, αλλά για να έχει το όχι νόηµα έπρεπε να πει το «ναι» σε κάτι άλλο. Ναι στη στράτευση. Ναι στο να τρέξει στα σύνορα και να υποστηρίξει µε το αίµα του την ακεραιότητα της πατρίδας. Την τιµή της οικογένειας. Την ορθόδοξη πίστη.
Αν έλεγε όχι και κοιµόταν στο σπίτι του, το όχι θα ήταν χωρίς αντίκρισµα. Οι κοκορόφτεροι του Μουσολίνι θα έφθαναν ανενόχλητοι στην Αθήνα. Η αντίσταση στα βουνά της Ηπείρου δε θα υπήρχε. Δε θα υπήρχε η πολύτιµη καθυστέρηση που τόσο βοήθησε τις συµµαχικές δυνάµεις. Δε θα υπήρχε το θρυλικό έπος του ‘40.
Σαν ο άνθρωπος λέει όχι υπερασπίζοντας την ελευθερία και να πεθάνει πολεµώντας, πεθαίνει ελεύθερος. Και φονευµένος είναι νικητής. Ο σκοπός του πετυχαίνει πλήρως. Τα ιδανικά του θα ζουν και όταν αυτός είναι πεθαµένος. Θα κηρύττουν στους αιώνες το κήρυγµα του ελεύθερου πνεύµατός του. Θα διαλαλούν τη νίκη του.
Δεν υπάρχει συζήτηση. Στη βία του Άξονα η Ελλάδα δεν υπέκυψε. Έκανε το καθήκον της προς την ελευθερία. Τα παιδιά της έγραψαν χρυσές σελίδες στην ιστορία της. Γι’ αυτά ειπώθηκε «οι ήρωες πολεµούν σαν Έλληνες». Ο ηρωισµός της γενιάς του ‘40 είναι κληρονοµιά πολύτιµη της Ελλάδας. Γι’ αυτή την κληρονοµιά δίκαια υπερηφανεύεται κάθε Έλληνας, αλλά και κάθε ελεύθερο πνεύµα.
Οι κληρονόµοι τέτοιων κληρονοµιών δεν έχουν δικαίωµα να επαναπαύονται στις δάφνες των προγόνων. Τους πρέπει να συνεχίζουν επάξια την κληρονοµιά. Να κοιµούνται και να ξυπνούν µε τη σκέψη. «Άµµες δε γ’ εσόµεθα πολλώ κάρρονες». «Εµείς όµως θα γίνουµε πολύ καλύτεροι». Και να µη τους ξεγελά το µελλοντικό «θα». Μην περιµένουν να παρουσιασθεί δήθεν ίδια ευκαιρία. Οι ευκαιρίες είναι πολλές. Η καθηµερινή ζωή είναι γεµάτη απ’ αυτές. Όποιος δε διακρίνει αυτές τις ευκαιρίες, ήρωας ποτέ δεν µπορεί να γίνει. Επάξια της κληρονοµιάς δε θα ζήσει. Θα ζει στο περίµενε. Και χωρίς να το καταλάβει θα φύγει. Και δε θα βρεθεί σηµάδι απ’ το πέρασµά του. Κι ας νόµιζε, ότι ήταν σπουδαίος.
Δεν είναι ανάγκη ν’ ανεβείς ψηλά για να συνεχίσεις την ηρωική κληρονοµιά. Ο καθένας αναδεικνύεται ήρωας στο πόστο του. Στ’ αλήθεια, µεγαλύτεροι ήρωες αποδεικνύονται αυτοί που ‘ναι στα µικρά πόστα. Σε κάθε ιστορία υπάρχουν πιο πολλοί ήρωες στρατιώτες από αξιωµατικούς και µάλιστα πολλές φορές και πιο µεγάλοι.
Σήµερα το ελληνικό έθνος συνεχίζει την ιστορική πορεία του όχι στα σύνορα της γεωγραφικά µικρής Ελλάδας. Συνεχίζει την ιστορική του πορεία ανά τα πέρατα της οικουµένης. Συ που ζεις στον Καναδά, στο Τορόντο ή το Μόντρεαλ, το Βανκούβερ ή το Χάλιφαξ, το Γουίντζορ ή το Ίνουβικ, είσαι µια προέκταση του ελληνικού έθνους και συνεχίζεις την ιστορική του πορεία. Και συ είσαι κληρονόµος των βαρειών κληρονοµιών. Και συ φέρεις την ίδια ευθύνη. Και συ θα δώσεις λόγο των πράξεών σου έναντι του Ελληνικού έθνους, της ιστορίας και του Θεού.
Ζήσε µε συνέπεια αναλογιζόµενος τις ευθύνες σου. Επίτρεψέ µου πρακτικά να σου ειπώ µερικά πράγµατα για το πώς να εφαρµόσεις την κληρονοµιά του ΟΧΙ. Πες όχι στην αφοµοίωση! Καθηµερινά αγωνίζου να µένεις Έλληνας. Και µέσα στο σπίτι σου µίλα µόνο ελληνικά στα παιδιά σου. Και στείλε τα παιδιά σου στο ελληνικό σχολείο και στο κατηχητικό σχολείο. Κι αν δεν υπάρχει ελληνικό σχολείο εκεί που ζεις, πάρε ένα δάσκαλο ή µια δασκάλα. Κι αν δεν υπάρχει δάσκαλος ή δασκάλα, γίνου συ ο ίδιος µε τα όσα ξέρεις, δάσκαλος των παιδιών σου. Και πήγαινε στην ορθόδοξη εκκλησιά. Και λάβε µέρος στα µυστήρια της εκκλησιάς σου. Και κάµε την προσευχή σου πάντα στο σπίτι σου. Και γίνου το ορθόδοξο παράδειγµα των παιδιών σου.
Πες ναι στη συνεργασία και την ένωση του Ελληνισµού. Και εργάζου γι’ αυτήν. Μη γίνεσαι αρνητικός µε τη δήθεν δικαιολογία, πως φταίει ο δεσπότης, ο παπάς, ο πρόεδρος. Αυτοί σήµερα είναι και αύριο δεν είναι. Η συνεργασία, η ένωση και η πρόοδος του Ελληνισµού είναι για πάντα.
Αυτά ζητεί από σένα σήµερα να κάµεις η ελληνορθόδοξη κληρονοµιά σου. Μπορεί να σου φαίνονται µικρά, αλλά είναι µεγάλα. Μπορεί να σου φαίνονται απλά, αλλά είναι δύσκολα. Δεν είναι φανταχτερά και γι’ αυτό ίσως κάνεις αυτές τις σκέψεις. Να εφαρµόζεις αυτά καθηµερινά στη ζωή σου, είναι πραγµατικός ηρωϊσµός. Με αυτό τον τρόπο είσαι πανέτοιµος να ανταποκριθείς σε µεγαλύτερα, όταν η πατρίδα σου το ζητήσει. Μπορεί µε εµπιστοσύνη ν’ αντικρύσεις τον δίκαιο Κριτή σου.
Ελληνορθόδοξε του Καναδά, ζήσε καθηµερινά τον ηρωϊσµό του ‘40. Συνέχιζε την ιστορική ελληνορθόδοξη πορεία του έθνους σου. Πες έµπρακτα όχι, σε κάθε τι αρνητικό και ναι, σε κάθε τι θετικό για την πρόοδο του Ελληνισµού. Ζήτω η 28η Οκτωβρίου 1940.

What It Means to Say “ΝΟ”!

To say “No” is a denial, but it also entails taking a position. A ‘No’ without a ‘Yes’ can be quite meaningless. Let us try to understand this.
The day is October 28, 1940. In response to Italy’s telegram, Greece replies ‘No.’ The Italians will not tread on the holy ground of the homeland. They will not make their way to Athens.
The Greek people say ‘No,’ but in order for the ‘No’ to be meaningful, they say ‘Yes’ to other things. They say ‘Yes’ to conscription. They say ‘Yes’ to defending the borders and the integrity of the homeland with their lives. They say ‘Yes’ to the honour of the family, to their precious Orthodox faith.
If they had said ‘No’ and did nothing else, the ‘No’ would be meaningless. Mussolini’s feather-capped soldiers would arrive undisturbed all the way to Athens. The resistance in the mountains of Epirus would not exist. The valuable delay that helped the Allied forces so much would not have happened. The world-renowned Epic of 1940 would not have taken place.
When men and women perish defending their freedom, they remain free. They are victorious, even in death. They have accomplished their purpose. Their ideals will live on after death. Their immortal free spirit will be an example to others who will further broadcast their triumph.
There is no debate. Greece did not give in to the violence of the Axis powers. Greeks accomplished their duty to freedom, giving rise to brilliant new chapters of Greece’s history. That is why it is said that “heroes fight like Greeks.” The heroism of that generation is a precious heritage for us. Every Greek and every free spirit can be justifiably proud of this legacy.
The heirs of such exploits have no right to simply rest on the achievements of their ancestors. They must properly continue the legacy. Let us think daily about how we can become even better, go even further. And let us not be deceived by the temptation that we can wait around for when the occasion arises, for the same historical opportunity to present itself. The opportunities today are many. Our lives are full of them. If we do not open ourselves to them and seize them, we will never become heroes worthy of our ancestors. We will live in anticipation. And without realizing it, we will eventually move on from this life and no sign of our passage will remain. Even though we may think that we are remarkable persons.
We do not need to ascend professionally or socially to continue the heroic legacy. Everyone can be a hero in their own right. In fact, the greatest heroes are often those who find themselves in lower stations of life. In every story, there are many heroes, from low-ranking soldiers to higher-ranking officers and powerful leaders.
Today, the Greek nation continues its historical course but not only within the geographical borders of present-day Greece. It continues its historical course throughout the world. All of us who live here in Canada, whether in Toronto or Montreal, Vancouver or Halifax, Windsor or Inuvik, we are an extension of the Greek nation and continue its historical course. We are heirs to a weighty heritage. And we bear the same responsibility. We will have to account for our actions before the Greek nation, before history, and before God.
Let us live conscientiously by carefully reflecting on our duties. Allow us to mention some practical things about how we can implement the legacy of ‘OXI’ Day. Let us first say ‘No’ to assimilation! Every day, let us strive to remain Greek. And in our homes, let us speak only Greek to our children. And let us send our children to Greek school and Sunday school. And if there is no Greek school where we live, we can find a tutor. And if there is no tutor, we will teach your children ourselves what we know. And let us go to the Orthodox Church. Let us take part in the sacraments, and always do our prayer at home. In matters of faith, let us teach our children with the example we provide them.
Let us say ‘Yes’ to working together and maintaining the unity of Hellenism. And let us exert ourselves for this. Let us not become negative, simply blaming the bishop, the priest, or the president. These persons may be there today, but not tomorrow. However, the unity and advancement of Hellenism will endure forever.
This is what our Greek Orthodox heritage requires of us. These things may seem small, but they are immensely important. They may seem simple, but they can be very difficult. They may not be very fancy or exotic, but to work for their achievement on a daily basis in our lives is the meaning of true heroism. In this way, we will be able to respond to even greater challenges when our homeland demands this of us. We may then face our righteous Judge with confidence.
To all the Greek Orthodox Christians in Canada, let us celebrate daily the heroism of the 1940s. Let us continue the historic Greek Orthodox course of our people. For the progress of Hellenism, let us say ‘No’ to everything negative and ‘Yes’ to everything positive. Long live the 28th of October 1940.
